ùPAR@ ` âTEXT ` uWoolson, Constance Fenimore1840╨1894writerBorn on March 5, 1840, in Claremont, New Hampshire, Constance Woolson, a grand-niece on her mother╒s side of James Fenimore Cooper, grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended private schools in Cleveland and in 1858 graduated from Mme. Chegaray╒s School in New York City. During the Civil War she engaged in hospital work. Following her father╒s death in 1869 she accompanied her mother on travels through the East and South, and in 1870 she began submitting travel sketches and stories to Harper╒s, Putnam╒s, Lippincott╒s, Atlantic Monthly, and other magazines. Castle Nowhere: Lake-Country Sketches, 1875, collected several of her local-color stories written somewhat in the manner of Bret Harte. During the later 1870s she spent much of her time in Florida and the Carolinas, which became the scenes of her best stories. In 1879 she traveled to Europe, where she remained for the rest of her life, wintering usually in Florence and Venice, summering in Germany and Switzerland, visiting Greece and Egypt, and making extended stays in England in 1883╨1886 and 1890╨1892. Her novels, serialized in Harper╒s before publication in book form, included Anne, 1882, For the Major, 1883, East Angels, 1886, Jupiter Lights, 1889, and Horace Chase, 1894; all were set in faithfully detailed locales, and they exhibited a progressive tendency toward a psychological subtlety suggestive of the writing of her close friend, Henry James. She also published a collection of short stories as Rodman the Keeper: Southern Sketches, 1886. After a lengthy period of ill health she died on January 24, 1894, following a fall (perhaps intentional) from a window in her Venice apartment.
